What to Expect at Your First Gynecology Exam

Mar 25, 2026
It can be scary to have an appointment with unknown expectations. Knowing what happens during a gynecology exam makes it much easier to walk through the door. Here’s a look at what your first visit covers and how you can prepare for it.

If you’ve been putting off scheduling your first gynecology appointment, you aren’t alone. For many women, not knowing what to expect is reason enough to delay. The exam itself is routine, and understanding what happens during the visit goes a long way toward making it feel less intimidating.

At Tru Medical Management, our team provides comprehensive gynecology care for women at every stage of life, from adolescence through menopause, at two locations in the Navy Hill and Williamsburg neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. Here’s a clear picture of what your first visit looks like.

When to schedule your first gynecology exam

Most medical guidelines recommend that women schedule their first gynecology visit between the ages of 13 and 15, or when they become sexually active, whichever comes first. That first visit doesn’t necessarily include a pelvic exam. It’s often more of a conversation, an opportunity to ask questions, discuss your health history, and establish care with a provider you trust.

Even if you’ve never had symptoms or concerns, routine gynecology care is how we catch potential issues early, before they require more involved treatment.

What your gynecology exam covers

Our team starts by reviewing your medical and family history and asks about your menstrual cycle, any symptoms you’ve noticed, and your general health.

The physical portion of the exam may include:

  • A breast exam to look for lumps or other breast changes
  • A pelvic exam to assess the health of your reproductive organs
  • A Pap smear to screen for cervical cell changes is typically recommended starting at age 21
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, if appropriate, based on your history and risk factors
  • Bloodwork, if a broader picture of your health is warranted

Not every visit includes all of these. We will walk you through what they’re doing and why at each step.

What a Pap smear involves

A Pap smear is one of the most misunderstood parts of a gynecology exam. During the test, our team collects a small sample of cells from your cervix using a soft brush or spatula. We then send the same to a lab to check for any abnormal cell changes that could indicate cervical dysplasia or, in some cases, early cervical cancer.

The procedure takes about a minute. Some women feel mild pressure or brief discomfort, but it passes quickly.

Gynecology concerns you can bring up at your first visit

Your first visit is also a good time to bring up anything that’s been on your mind, even things that seem minor or embarrassing. Gynecology care covers a broad range of concerns, including:

  • Irregular, painful, or heavy periods
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Vaginal discharge or infections
  • Questions about birth control options
  • Sexual health concerns

We’re here to give you clear answers and connect you with the right care.

Birth control and family planning at your gynecology appointment

If you have questions about birth control, your first gynecology visit is a natural time to have that conversation. Tru Medical Management offers a range of options, including oral contraceptives, hormonal and non-hormonal implants, and nonsurgical forms of permanent pregnancy prevention.

How to prepare for your gynecology exam

A little preparation makes the visit smoother for everyone. Before your visit:

  • Schedule your appointment when you aren’t on your period, if possible, especially if a Pap smear is planned
  • Keep notes of questions or symptoms you want to discuss
  • Be prepared to share details about your menstrual cycle
  • Bring a list of any medications or supplements you’re currently taking

There’s no need to do anything special to prepare physically. Avoid douching or using vaginal products in the days before your appointment, as these can affect test results.
