I'm Very Sick: Should I Go to the Walk-In Clinic or the ER?

Apr 21, 2026
Same-day care without the ER wait or cost is available for most non-emergency illnesses and injuries. Find out what conditions our Brooklyn walk-in clinic treats and when you should head to the emergency room instead.

When you feel terrible and need care fast, the last thing you want to do is make the wrong call about where to go. Heading to the emergency room for something a walk-in clinic can handle means hours in a waiting room and a much larger bill. Going to a walk-in clinic for something that needs emergency care is a more serious mistake.

At Tru Medical Management, we offer walk-in clinic services at both of our locations in the Navy Hill and Williamsburg neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. Here’s a quick guide to help you determine which facility to visit.

Go to the ER for anything life-threatening

Emergency rooms exist for situations where time is critical and advanced intervention may be necessary. If you or someone with you is experiencing any of the following, call 911 or get to an emergency room immediately:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Signs of stroke, including sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, or slurred speech
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Loss of consciousness or confusion
  • Heavy, uncontrolled bleeding
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Head injuries with loss of consciousness

These situations require imaging equipment, surgical teams, and resources that a walk-in clinic isn’t equipped to provide.

A walk-in clinic can handle more than you might think

For conditions that are genuinely uncomfortable or disruptive but not life-threatening, a walk-in clinic offers same-day care without the wait times or costs associated with an ER visit. Our team at Tru Medical Management treats a wide range of non-emergency conditions, including:

  • Colds, flu, and strep throat
  • Fever
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Minor wounds and cuts
  • Rashes and hives
  • Eye irritation
  • Urinary tract infections

We also offer on-site diagnostic and laboratory services, including rapid, PCR, and antibody COVID-19 testing, so you can get answers quickly without being sent elsewhere.

When the line between emergency and urgent care feels blurry

Some symptoms are harder to categorize. Chest tightness that comes and goes, a fever that won’t break, or pain that feels unusual but isn’t severe can leave you unsure of your next step.

In those cases, err on the side of caution. If something feels seriously wrong, go to the ER. If you’re uncertain but your symptoms aren’t escalating rapidly, a walk-in clinic can evaluate you and refer you to emergency care if needed.

The goal is to match the level of care to the situation. A walk-in clinic visit typically costs considerably less than an ER visit for the same condition, and our team can address most everyday illnesses and injuries promptly with the same level of personalized attention you’d receive at a scheduled appointment.
